Do’s and Don’ts for Caring for Stone Surfaces
Proper maintenance of natural stone surfaces helps preserve their beauty and durability. Follow these essential guidelines to keep your stone products in top-tier condition.
The Do's
Use Gentle, pH-Neutral Cleaners
For routine cleaning, use clean water and a neutral (pH-7) cleaner. “Soapless” cleaners are ideal as they prevent residue buildup, but mild, phosphate-free, biodegradable liquid dish soaps or soap flakes are also acceptable—provided you rinse thoroughly.
Clean with Proper Technique
- Wet the surface with warm (not boiling) water.
- Apply the cleaning solution and was using small, overlapping motions.
- Rinse thoroughly with fresh water, changing rinse water frequently to remove all traces of cleaner and chemical residue.
- Dry with a soft cloth or cotton flannel, letting the surface to air dry completely. A chamois can also be used for a streak-free finish.
Preventative Care
Prevention is key as damage to stone is often permanent. Treat polished stone with the same care and diligence you would give a fine wood finish.
Act Fast on Spills
Immediately wipe up spills - especially acidic substances like citrus juice, wine, or liquor—and rinse with water to prevent staining or etching.
Use Protective Barriers
- Coasters: Place under all glasses, especially for those with alcohol or citrus-based drinks.
- Hot Plates: Use under hot dishes to protect against heat damage.
- Placemats & Felt Pads: Place under ceramics, silver, and decor items to prevent any potential scratching.
By following these care guidelines, your stone surface will maintain their beauty and last for many years to come.
